URBAN PROJECTS IN Greater Melbourne
EBD: An Experimental City
In 2008, the first Eco-Acupuncture project of the Victorian Eco-Innovation Lab (ecoinnovationlab.com) looked at the last large area of vacant land available for development in Melbourne’s CBD, known as E-Gate, and applied some very radical thinking. “Live Better, Consume Less: Welcome to EBD”.
FIRST CITY OF HUME PROJECT
The first Broadmeadows project 2010 showcases a series of design projects which are to be further developed and carried forward by Hume City Council Melbourne. The City is a large and rapidly developing centre north of Melbourne, caught up in many of the problems of burgeoning suburban sprawl, population growth, climate change, stressed infrastructure and impending broad-brush state planning. Multiple sites of intervention identified after Vision 2032 co-design engagement process.
GARDEN CITY in 2032
The city of Sunshine was designed according to the principles of Ebenezer Howard’s ‘Garden City’. It is on the junction of 5 railway lines and lies within Zone 1 on the metropolitan rail system. Per capita, Sunshine has the highest number of daily car trips in Greater Melbourne, but the lowest car ownership. Sunshine has high unemployment and a reputation for violence and drug-related crime. The council has been declared bankrupt twice in the last three decades and is now under administration. Council officers work hard to strategically manage Sunshine’s opportunities. With an active and engaged Residents’ Association (Sun RRA), local traders’ association (Sunshine Business Association), a well-regarded Youth Services Centre (VISYCares Hub) and local sustainability groups active in the area, Sunshine is a suburb well placed for the second Eco-Acupuncture exercise -2011..
